Before I can get to the meat of this post I need to define what I meant by “watching TV” in my post below. It is impossible to FULLY cut TV out of one’s life when living with people who do watch TV. I am bound to talk into a room where a television is on. I don’t want to entirely isolate myself from my family by sitting in a different room than them whenever they are watching TV. So allow me to be specific:
1) I will not turn on a TV
2) If I am in a room where someone is watching TV I will not request them to turn to a channel or show
3) I will not be in a room alone with the television on
Is that a copout? Maybe to some.
Last night I came home from church and my brother and his girlfriend were watching TV in one communal room and my parents were watching a different show in the other. The main dining areas have visual access to both. Where was I supposed to eat dinner? In my bedroom with my door closed? I think not. So during this Lenten Season I may have some exposure to TV. All that to say this…
My brother and his girlfriend are big fans of American Idol. It disgusts me. I feel like I come home every night to them watching a recorded episode of American Idol. They always give me a hard time for not watching the show. It’s not that I hate American Idol. I just never connected with the narratives or stories of the participants. I was never emotionally connected. Thus, I have never invested my time to watching the show. Last night, though, it finally connected after I watched this:
Can you believe that voice? I have a man crush! It wasn’t just Heejun’s singing that drew me into the American Idol craze, though. If you go to his Facebook page (click here) you can watch a video telling more about him and his story. He works with special needs kids and speaks endearingly about them and how they have affected his life. And if you watch THIS video you will quickly learn why I love his sense of humor haha. (My favorite line is, “I’m starting to have a bad perspective on cowboys, even the Dallas Cowboys.”)
All this to say…stories are powerful. How we tell stories are powerful. A (seemingly) good, humble guy with a good sense of humor has drawn me into this show. I have fully joined Team Heejun!!!!!!
Tomorrow marks the beginning of the Lenten season of the Church calendar. Ash Wednesday happens every year 40 days before Palm Sunday (the first day of Holy Week). Traditionally the Church has fasted during this time of the year to create space to examine one’s life, specifically on one’s sin and unfaithfulness to God. I (Aaron) will be fasting from the following foods and things to create space in my life this Lenten season for self-reflection and invite you to join me in this fast:
- Meat
- Desserts (or sweets of any kind)
- Car radio
- Television (including sports)
- Espn.com (a website that consumes way too much of my time…feel free to insert Facebook or another)
Check out THEWAVELB.com for a broader explanation of the Lenten Season.
